Online Group Project

Posted by mrlopez on 14 December 2006

Our next project will be an online effort. Together, we will write a draft of the Book of Rules in the community of the novel The Giver.
We will all pitch in and submit one or two rules found (or implied) in the book.

In January, we will all make physical, hard-bound books from the rules.

Let’s start!

The Giver Study Guide Post – Updated

Posted by mrlopez on 13 December 2006

As we begin our discussion, remember that this exam tests first your ability to write properly and next your knowledge and opinions of the novel.

So, let’s start. As you comment, feel free to answer any/all of these. Also, reply and respond to each other.

1. The Community in this book has decided to sacrfice some things in exchange for others. What are those things (both sacrifice and benefits?)
2. Think of all the groups in the novel. Name some and tell why they are grouped together.
3. What do we call “Release” in our society today? How does the Catholic Church stand on this issue?
4. In your opinion, what is the definition of a “family?”
5. What’s the difference between tradition, rules, laws and customs?

6. In Jonas’ world, most citizens follow the rules and behave. However, we have seen some examples of rules being bent/broken. Briefly describe these incidents. What do they tell you about the people in this Utopia?

7. Think about how language is used in Jonas’ community. How is language a powerful tool that is used to control people’s thoughts and feelings?

8. As you remember, as young adults begin to go through puberty, pills are taken to control and supress (stop) their desires. Why do you think that the Citizens of Jonas’ community are afraid of sex and sexuality?
